Athletic Brewing Acquires Former Ballast Point HQ in San Diego

San Diego, CAAthletic Brewing, the leading non-alcoholic beer company in the United States, has acquired the former headquarters of Ballast Point Brewing in San Diego. This 107,000 square foot facility, known as the “Carroll Way facility,” marks a significant step in Athletic Brewing’s expansion.

What the Deal Includes

  • Production Capabilities: The facility comes with two brewing systems, one 300-barrel and one 150-barrel, allowing Athletic Brewing to increase production of its non-alcoholic beers.
  • Expansion Space: It includes a cellar, packaging line, quality assurance lab, and office spaces, enhancing Athletic Brewing’s operational capacity.
  • Ballast Point Taproom: The existing taproom will remain open to the public for the next 18 months during renovations, operated by Kings & Convicts, who acquired Ballast Point in 2020.

Athletic Brewing’s Growth

This acquisition is Athletic Brewing’s second in San Diego. In 2020, they bought Ballast Point’s former sour beer and barrel-aging facility nearby. Launched in 2018, Athletic Brewing now holds over 19% of the non-alcoholic beer market, with sales growing more than 62% year-over-year. The new facility is expected to double their brewing capacity in the US by late 2025.

A New Era for Ballast Point

While Athletic Brewing takes over the brewing operations, the Ballast Point taproom will continue to serve customers. Kings & Convicts plan to contract brew Ballast Point beers at another location.

This acquisition highlights the growing popularity of non-alcoholic beers and Athletic Brewing’s commitment to leading this market. Their purchase of the former Ballast Point HQ is a testament to their ambition and the shifting trends in the craft beer industry.
