Remembering a Strategist for Justice: Hank Adams on his 81st Birthday

Hank Adams’s Legacy of Native American Rights: A Tributary
Hank Adams, the renowned Native American rights fighter, would have turned 81 today, May 16. A Google Doodle honoring his life and continuing impact on Indigenous peoples was released this morning.

Adams, who died in 2020, had a significant role in ensuring Native Americans’ fishing rights and tribal sovereignty. Born on a Montana reserve in 1943, Henry Lyle Adams committed his life to promoting Indigenous legal rights and cultural preservation.

Adams was renowned for his strong strategic thinking and strong commitment to nonviolent protest. He had a significant role in the American Indian Movement (AIM), taking part in important occasions such as the 1973 standoff at Wounded Knee, South Dakota, and the 1972 seizure of the Bureau of Indian Affairs office in Washington, D.C. Adams was instrumental in mediating peaceful ends to heated disputes in both cases.

Beyond her activism, Adams was a skilled strategist who was knowledgeable about all aspects of Indigenous law. In his seminal work “20 Points,” he stated the historical treaty rights of Native American tribes, their vital needs, and a demand for new treaties with the federal government. The Battle for Rights to Fishing

Adams’ efforts to protect Native American tribes’ fishing rights in the Pacific Northwest are among his greatest accomplishments. He was a key player in the historic (United States v. Washington) Bold Decision of 1974. The right of Native Americans to hunt and fish on their ancestral lands, even in land they have given up to the state, was maintained by this Supreme Court ruling. The Boldt Decision guaranteed a sustainable future for this essential resource by establishing co-management of fisheries between tribes and the state.
