Cannes 2024: A Look at the Festival with Blockbusters, Buzz, and Huge Wins Thus far

With a stunning showcase of film, the 77th Cannes Film Festival is currently in full swing and adorning the French Riviera. Here’s a look at what’s going on in the glamorous world of Cannes this year (as of May 19th, 2024), from appreciate candidates to red carpet moments:

Blockbusters Take Center Stage

Every year the festival opens with a boom, and this year was no different. “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” George Miller’s eagerly awaited prequel, erupted onto the stage and was met with a resounding seven-minute standing ovation. Chris Hemsworth’s fascinating performance as a terrifying warlord has also received early praise, as has Anya Taylor-Joy’s portrayal of the famous Furiosa.

Award Nominees Leave Their Impression

Beyond the show, Cannes is also known for its esteemed honors. International talents and well-known directors such as Jacques Audiard (“Los Huesos”) and Noémie Merlant (“Soeurs”) are competing for the Palme d’Or in this year’s competition, which offers a varied mix. As per some sources, India has also broken its nation’s Palme d’Or jinx with a film about nurses.

Red Carpet Elegance

Without its iconic red carpet, Cannes wouldn’t be Cannes. At the premiere of “Kinds of Kindness,” Emma Stone dazzled in a sequined gown alongside co-stars Margaret Qualley and Hunter Schafer, giving fashionistas a spectacular show this year. Additionally on the red carpet were Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Kiara Advani, who represented the vibrant Indian film industry.

Debate and Discussion

Cannes serves as an opportunity for stimulating discussions in addition to entertainment. The reaction to the release of Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” this year has been uneven. While some consider it an ambitious but ultimately untidy project, others praise it as a visionary masterpiece. The festival gains more mystery from the film’s reception.

Looking Forward

There’s still plenty to come as the celebration continues. More glamorous events, riveting premieres, and the much awaited announcement of the Palme d’Or winner are all to be expected.
