Apalachee High School: Multiple shooting victims at high school, suspect in custody

On Wednesday morning, Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, became the site of a tragic active shooter situation that left multiple people injured. The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that one suspect is in custody, though details regarding the number of victims and their conditions remain unclear.

Incident Overview at Apalachee High School

The shooting unfolded during the morning hours, sending shockwaves through the tight-knit community of Winder, located about 45 miles outside of Atlanta. Senior student Sergio Caldera, 17, was in his chemistry class when he first heard the terrifying sounds of gunfire.

“My teacher opened the door to see what was happening. Another teacher quickly ran in, warning us to close the door because of an active shooter,” Caldera recounted. The teacher immediately locked the door, and the students huddled together at the back of the classroom, terrified as they heard screams from outside.

As the situation intensified, someone pounded on their classroom door, demanding to be let in. Moments later, more gunshots rang out, accompanied by more screams. Eventually, the students in Caldera’s class were evacuated to the football field, as the school implemented emergency protocols.
